The great Neapolitan, Domenico Scarlatti, son of the reknowned operatic composer Alessandro Scarlatti, achieved immortality for his keyboard sonatas, more than 550 of which survive. These works combining the cantilena of Italian opera with the rhythms of Spanish dance imbued the binary form with a grace, wit and variety never before equalled. The sound of the guitar runs through many of these works, long a favorite source of new repertoire for guitarists. Bach’s BWV 998 described by C.P.E. Bach as Prelude pour le luth o cembal was most likely written for the lute harpsichord (Lautenwerck) an unusual keyboard instrument built with gut strings and leather quills and said to sound exactly like a lute. The work features an A - B - A fugue and remarkable symmetry in that the outer movements are exactly 48 and 48 x 2 = 96 measures. Dionisio Aguado together with his great Catalan contemporary Fernando Sor, was a seminal figure in the development of the guitar. His Escuela de Guitarra, still in print today, remains one of the great pedagogical works for the instrument. The present Rondo is one of three brilliant works of his Op. 2, exploiting his advanced technique mastery of classical form. One of the leading Spanish composers of the twentieth century, Joaquin Rodrigo, remains best known for his well loved Concierto de Aranjuez. His Invocacion y Danza, an homage to manuel de Falla has numerous indirect musical quotes from that composer’s El Amor Brujo. Federico Moreno Torroba, strongly associated with the Spanish operetta form known as Zarzuela, also produced a magnificent collection of guitar solo works, many of them like the present Sonatina dedicated to Andres Segovia.
