Prizes
- 1st prize: $5,000 and a concert at 2017 Boston GuitarFest, and a guitar by Mexican luthier Noe Zalapa. Note ONLY 5-day + Competition registrants are eligible to win the first-prize guitar.
- 2nd prize: $2,500
- 3rd prize: $1,000
Schedule for 2016
- Preliminary round: Thursday June 16, 10am–4pm at Williams Hall, NEC
- Semifinal round: Friday, June 17, 10am–1pm at Williams Hall, NEC
- Final round: Saturday, June 18, 2–4pm at Jordan Hall, NEC*
* Competitors also competing in the GFA competition will have ample time to reach Denver by their mandatory meeting on Sunday, June 19.
Eligibility
- Contestants must be at the outset of their careers and may not have professional representation.
- Previous first-prize winners of the Boston GuitarFest competition are not eligible.
- All ages are permitted.
Required Piece
Pick one from the three categories:
- A work written by a Spanish composer.
- A work dedicated to a Spanish artist of the guitar.
- A work with a Spanish theme.
Competition Rounds
- Preliminary round: not to exceed 10 minutes. Contestant must include required piece.
- Semifinal round: not to exceed 15 minutes. Free choice, not including the required piece played in the preliminary round. (A different piece on the Spanish theme may be chosen, but is not required).
- Final round: not to exceed 25 minutes. Contestant must include required piece. This work may be the same or different as in the preliminary round.
Performance Requirements
- Individual movements from major works are acceptable.
- No concertos or chamber music will be permitted.
- Only three competitors will be chosen for the final round; no fourth prize will be awarded.
- The required piece that is performed in the preliminary round may not be repeated in the semifinal round, but may be repeated in the final round. While other works may be repeated from round to round, the judges welcome a variety of repertoire.
